The Pauper Fountain, an interactive phallic fountain, was officially opened to the public in the Frisian town of Workum on Sunday.
Omrop Fryslân writes that the fountain is a public urinal and is made of 230 phalluses, and was designed to protest the perceived mandatory nature of the eleven fountains project during Leeuwarden-Fryslân 2018.
The eleven cities of the Elfstedentocht were called upon to create their own sculptures in honor of the European Capital of Culture year. The Paupers Foundation, a Frisian theatre group, felt that the towns did not have a say in whether they took part: “either every city had to take part, or none.”
The Paupers decided to create their own artistically subversive fountain and they were able to build it thanks to 12,000 euros they raised through crowdfunding. The LF2018 organisers have added the project to the official events calendar and it will be traveling to various cities and towns through the year.
