Starting on the 15th of October, the railroad crossing at the Paterswoldseweg in Groningen will be closed to cars until December of 2019.
The Groninger Internet Courant reports that the rail crossing will be briefly closed to bike traffic in October as well. From the 15th through the 29th, no cyclists will be permitted to cross the tracks at that point.
Cars will have to take a detour along the western ring road and the Hoendiep, or the Parkweg and Emmasingel. Cyclists and pedestrians will be rerouted to the Peizerweg, and cars will be directed to the Parkweg and Emmasingel via the Hoendiep.
Starting on the 29th of October, cyclists and pedestrians will be able to cross the tracks via a temporary cycling and pedestrian tunnel above the rail crossing. Emergency vehicles will be permitted to cross the tracks as normal.
The rail crossing is part of long terms plans for a higher volume of trains with more cars to traverse the tracks. Building a tunnel underneath the tracks for cars, bikes and pedestrians has been deemed safer than an overpass.
