There were 578,690 overnight stays in the city in 2017, which is roughly a 4 percent increase over 2016. The Groninger Internet Courant reports that the biggest reason for the increase is the number of people visiting the region from abroad: in 2016, there were 342,000 overnight stays, and in 2017, that was up to 447,000.
The Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics indicated earlier this year that 2017 was a record-breaking year for the province: there were 1,454,000 overnight stays in 2016, and 1,559,000 in 2017, a seven percent increase. Across the country, more and more people are choosing to stay in hotels than going camping.
