Cafés and restaurants in Assen had to close their doors over the weekend due to crowds gathering
Cafés on the Markt in Assen had to make a difficult decision on Saturday night: just after midnight, four cafes jointly decided to lock up for the evening. According to them, it became too busy on the terraces, which meant that Coronavirus regulations could not be observed. As reported by RTV Drenthe.
Café 1809 Louis Napoleon on the Markt was one of the cafes that had to request that its visitors leave. “Too bad, because it was a nice evening, it was fun and there was a good atmosphere”, said cafe owner Ronald Obbes.
According to Obbes, it became too busy on the terraces of the four cafes that had opened the doors. The cafe owners then put their heads together and came to the decision to close for safety reasons: everyone had to leave the terraces.
Nevertheless, the decision was taken up well, says Obbes. “All visitors left understanding and silent. Within half an hour the Market was empty.” According to him, the incident was a good example of how visitors did not place responsibility with the outlets. Since visitors left the terraces without any problems, intervention by the authorities was not necessary.
