Starting in 2019, the Dutch national rail service NS will start a pilot with a faster Intercity train on the Groningen-Zwolle line and the Groningen-Randstad line.

The Groninger Internet Courant reports that the new connections will not stop in Assen or Lelystad and will travel at speeds of 160 km per hour in some sections. The changes to the journey should cut 15 minutes off current travel times.
The NS will decide whether or not to permanently add the streamline service based on the outcome of the pilot. If NS decides to do so, the new service would officially be added at some point from 2021 onward. The faster Intercity train could help to make a different for commuters during rush hour.
