Across Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland, primary and secondary schools are working to find space where children who have fled from Ukraine can start attending classes, as well as qualified staff and translators to teach them.

                      Groningen

Starting on Tuesday, 22 March, Ukrainian children in the Selwerd neighborhood in the city of Groningen can attend one of four nearby primary schools. According to OOG TV, 18 children living in the Cornus student flat on the Kornoeljestraat can go to CBS De Wegwijzer, OBS De Pendinghe, SBO Bekenkampschool or the RKDBS Bisschop Bekkersschool. The flat, which is run by SSH, is currently housing dozens of Ukrainian refugee families.

What do the abbreviations stand for?

CBS = Christian primary school (Christelijke basisschool)

OBS = Public primary school (openbare basisschool)

SBO = Special primary school (speciale basisonderwijs)

RKDBS = Roman Catholic Dalton primary school (Rooms-Katholieke Dalton Basisschool)

Sarah Diekstra, the director of CBS De Wegwijzer, told OOGTV that the youngest children can come to school at De Pendige school and would join Dutch children in the class. Children from 3 to 8 can attend classes initially from 9 to 12 at De Wegwijzer, with the intention of extending the available hours.

                      Language barrier and staff

There are several challenges standing in the way of offering the Ukrainian children classes: the language barrier, and finding qualified staff. While multilingualism is common in Ukraine, with many people speaking Ukrainian and Russian, English and Dutch are far less common as second languages.

Diekstra says that several of the Ukrainian residents of the Cornus flat were secondary teachers in Ukraine, and they have been asked to help the students overcome the language barrier. As for personnel to teach the children, Diekstra says that several former staff members and several Ukrainian university students in Groningen have volunteered to contribute.

                      Drenthe

Elsewhere in the north, the municipalities of Emmen and Borger-Odoorn in Drenthe will be working together with the Expertisecentrum Anderstaligen (Non-native speakers Expertise Centre) in Emmen to create a dedicated school for Ukrainian children who have fled the war.

In the Netherlands, non-Dutch speaking children typically enroll in an intermediate school for up to two years while they learn Dutch, and then gradually transition into the conventional school system.

In Drenthe, the Expertisecentrum Anderstaligen provides that intermediate education. Dagblad van het Noorden reports that the municipalities are currently searching for a suitable location for a new school. Most of the Ukrainian children who have fled to Drenthe are living either at the Parc Sander vacation park or the former Fletcher Hotel in Emmen, but some are also being housed by guest families in the region.

                      Friesland

Schools in Friesland are expecting around 1,600 Ukrainian children to enrol in the near future, consisting of 1,000 primary school students and 600 secondary school students.

According to the Leeuwarder Courant, the municipality of Leeuwarden is planning to teach the Ukrainian refugees at a dedicated location: local schools will help with finding qualified staff, and a location for the school has yet to be confirmed.

All of the educators in the region who are helping to set up education opportunities for the children are acutely aware that the children are likely to have psychological trauma from the war, as well as the difficulty and uncertainty of finding themselves in an unfamiliar environment.

(Christelijke basicschool)

(Rooms-Katholieke Dalton Basisschool)
