Noordlease Stadium renamed Hitachi Stadium

The Noordlease Stadium, home to the FC Groningen football club, is getting a new name: Hitachi Stadium.

Translation by Traci White

According to RTV Noord, the name change is the result of the Japanese multinational Hitachi buying Noordlease, a car leasing service, last year. FC Groningen said at the time that the name of the stadium would not change due to the buyout, but that appears not to be the case after all.

The stadium in the south eastern area of the city had been called the Euroborg from time it was opened in 2006, and the name was changed in 2016 to Noordlease Stadium. The new stadium will become the Hitachi Stadium as of the coming football season.

FC Groningen has yet to officially confirm the name change. It is unclear if the new name will have any impact on the club’s financial situation.
