A poignant and revealing Soviet story, a playful Iranian theatre experiment with famous Groningers, an unsettling Australian virtual reality film and a heart-breaking Argentinian monologue about unrequited love are just a small selection of the extensive (international) line-up for the 2018 Noorderzon festival in late August.
The Groninger Internet Courant reports that this year’s festival will be officially opened by Sarah Vanhee, a Flemish theatre producer who is considered among the best of her generation. This will be the fourth year in a row that Vanhee has been featured at the festival, and this year, she will be staging her newest project, “Unforetold”: a play about the unbiased and unspoiled logic of children and how there can be light in the dark, as well as darkness in the lighter things in lives.
The end of summer festival will run between 23 August and 2 September. The 2018 edition, which is the 28th Noorderzon festival, will feature 27 international theatre, dance, and circus acts, along with special tours and virtual reality films and exhibits. Tickets will also go on sale for intimate musical performances in the Spiegeltent, two atmospheric concerts in the Lutherse Kerk and three lectures which Noorderzon is organising in collaboration with Studium Generale.
Noorderzon is a somewhat unusual combination of a cutting-edge performing arts festival with a large summer festival with 150,000 visitors over the course of eleven days. The Noorderplantsoen is transformed into a festival village where theatre, dance, music, literary and visual arts performances go hand in hand with outdoor dining. Thousands of guests wander through the park and take in the atmosphere, or meet up for drinks with friends, especially in the evening when the trees are illuminated silver and green. Performances take place inside tents, on outdoor stages or even inside small containers across the park, and a number of venues across the city will also host cultural acts during the festival through Noorderzon DownTown.
The full line-up of the Noorderzon festival will be posted on 23 July at noorderzon.nl/programma.
