Starting Friday, supermarkets near the Noorderplantsoen in Groningen will give biodegradable picnic blankets to customers heading to the park.
Dagblad van het Noorden writes that the supermarkets hope the initiative will help to keep the park clean: picnicking park-goers can use the biodegradable blankets as bin bags.
During a recent heat wave, thousands of people headed to the Noorderplantson and many left heaps of rubbish behind once bins became full.
The Groninger Gezinsbode reports that participating supermarkets include Jumbo at De Beren and at the Wilhelminakade, Coop at the Kerklaan and the Albert Heijn on the Oude Ebbingestraat.
The blankets have been available in the park for a while, but the municipality hopes that adding more distribution spots will help to tackle the litter issue in the park.
