Although there are many free performances and activities Leeuwarden-Fryslân 2018 programme, ticket prices for Capital of Culture year events cannot be offered at a discount for benefits recipients.
Leeuwarden mayor Ferd Crone and the city aldermen wanted the events happening throughout the year to be more affordable for lower income people. According to the Leeuwarder Courant, it was determined that discounts could not be offered, but mayor Crone pointed out that many of the biggest events of the year are free to the public.
“Up to this point, the focus of the LF2018 marketing department has been on making sure enough tickets are sold to actually pay for the events”, Crone says. “Now that ticket sales are going well for many of the events, the organisation will start focusing more on promoting all of the free events going on this year.”
A list of dozens of free events has been made available, such as the Frisian Street Festival, the Places of Hope exhibit and the giant puppets of Royal Luxe in Leeuwarden and the Tall Ships Race in Harlingen.
