On the newgym website, which is free and available in English, gym seekers can compare facilities based on membership price, opening hours, facilities and group lesson availability.
Jelle Berrevoets and Danny Reijenga, who are both fourth year students at the Hanze University of Applied Science, came up with the idea when they were looking for new gyms to join themselves. The site is split up based on city, province or gym chain – newgym currently lists 52 gyms across Friesland, 27 in Drenthe and 58 in the province of Groningen – and also features reviews from other gym members.
The two Hanze students attribute the fact that around 30 percent of people who sign up for a gym membership quit within a year to the customer expectations not being met. The duo decided that consumers would benefit from being able to evaluate different gyms in one place online, similar to hotel and restaurant websites.
According to the Steenwijker Courant, Berrevoets and Reijenga have been working to develop the site over the past year alongside their studies, and newgym officially launched online two months ago, just in time for everyone whose New Year’s resolution was to hit the gym.
