The municipality presented its plans regarding the remodelling of Grote Markt last Wednesday. Whereas the centre is to remain empty to provide space for events or fairs, according to the plan, the rest is to be enhanced by green spaces, water features, and seating elements.

According to the municipality, the conscious decision was made to create more green spaces. The green areas are supposed to increase the area’s attractiveness and be a response to climate change.
Water and seating elements will be installed alongside the margins of Grote Markt. Additionally, space for commercial terraces will be provided. The area in the middle remains empty so that the square retains its open character. The Martinitoren and the City Hall remain clearly visible to everyone.
Water features will offer a refreshment during warm summer days and provide ice rinks in winter. Taxi ranks will disappear from Grote Markt and be relocated in the immediate vicinity.
After the municipal council has approved the final design, the renovation can start in the spring of 2022. From September 13-27, large panels will be installed at Grote Markt, inviting visitors to learn more about the plans.
