The new nitrogen factory which Gasunie plans to build in Zuidbroek in the province of Groningen is projected to cost 500,000 euros.
The new facility will be built next to a smaller existing nitrogen facility which opened in 2012.
A nitrogen facility separates nitrogen from the air in distillation towers. In Groningen, the processed nitrogen can be added to high caloric gas from Russia and Norway, giving it the same characteristics as gas from Groningen which is widely used in homes.
RTV Noord reports that the new factory has been identified by economic minister Eric Wiebes as a way to end natural gas extraction operations in the province of Groningen by 2030.
