The Groninger Museum building has been in existence for 25 years, and is celebrating with an exhibition of the designer Alessandro Mendini
The Italian chief architect of that building, died last year, and is being honored from Saturday with a large exhibition about his work: ‘Mendo Mendini’.
More than two years ago, the museum approached Mendini with the idea for an exhibition of his work, which he could design according to his own insight, and he immediately agreed
He devised the exhibition, which has been named Mondo Mendini – The world of Alessandro Mendini ‘, himself.
For the exhibition, Mendini chose not only his own work, but also that of past and present artists and designers who inspired him, including Paul Signac, Wassily Kandinsky, Henri Matisse, Oskar Schlemmer, Theo van Doesburg and Gerrit Rietveld.
“With both visual art, architecture and design, the variation of the more than two hundred objects on display is enormous. Mondo Mendini shows the extraordinary creativity and humor of the designer who gave Groningen an internationally renowned eye-catcher”, the museum promises.
The exhibition can be seen until May next year.
