Most of the new cases are in the 18-30 age category
On Wednesday it will become clear whether the recent increase in the number of Coronavirus infections in Groningen will lead to new regional measures being announced. According to a spokesman for Mayor Koen Schuiling, who is also chairman of the Security Council, there is to be a consultation between all regional parties tomorrow.
In recent days, the number of positive Coronavirus tests in the province has risen sharply. The city of Groningen is also proving to be a bit of a hotspot, with several student associations also announcing multiple cases, reports the GIC.
“There is now a lot of talk about Coronavirus hotspots within student associations, but source and contact research show that the infections do not necessarily all take place within those associations,” said spokesman Hans Coenraads.
“So we first have to determine where exactly the infections originate and what measures, if any, need to be taken.”
In March, developments moved so quickly that a national lockdown was declared within a few days.
On Friday, the municipality already indicated that it was considering possible measures. According to the spokesman for the municipality, Wednesday is not too late for a consultation between the regional parties.
“The situation today cannot be compared with when you look at hospital admissions. The absolute numbers of new infections are also not yet in proportion to the rest of the country, ”says Coenraads.
