A new development will bring office space, apartments, and a Tapas restaurant
Translated by Thomas Ansell
The well known square de Markt in Assen is to receive a boost with a large corner building on the square to be fully refurbished. The building is located on the corner between the square itself and the Kerkstraat, and was previously home to tapas bar Manolitos. It will be completed in an ‘old style’, having been thoroughly changed throughout the latter half of the last century, as reported by RTV Drenthe.
A new hospitality outlet will also be coming to the empty space where Gulle Gans was established, at de Markt 18. The building, de Markt 15, was home to Bodega Manolitos for several years, but its upper floors were empty. A subsidy has now been approved by the Gemeente Assen for city development, which will partially finance the refurbishment of the building.
The two uppermost floors of the building will be turned into four apartments and office space. The Asser architectural bureau 12WAT Architecten have come up with a plan that preserves existing elements and adds a more ‘old style’ look for the building, says director Tino Hoven. The bureau itself will likely move into the office space: “we have our offices in another historic building on de Markt, but we are somewhat growing out of it”, said Hoven.
Aside from the refurbishment at de Markt 15, its neighbouring building will also be getting a refresh. It was previously the well-regarded restaurant De Gulle Gans, however owner Sascha Gans closed the restaurant in 2012, and it was replaced by Flint, a restaurant that failed to live up to expectations and closed two years after opening. Entrpreneur Geert te Velde has just opened the coffee-house and bar Autentieq in the empty space.
