Hélène J., the mother of an 8-year-old girl, Sharleyne, who was found dead after falling from the tenth story of their flat in 2015, has been acquitted of her daughter’s murder.
The Public Prosecution had called for J. to be sentenced to 10 years in jail, but the judge who heard her case acquitted her of manslaughter.
According to the prosecution, J. choked her daughter and then either pushed her or let her fall off the balcony of their flat in Hoogeveen in 2015. The court did not convict her of manslaughter due to a lack of definitive evidence.
J. has maintained her innocence and was not present in court during the sentencing. The Public Prosecution will likely appeal the ruling.
