More skeletal remains found near Broerekerk in Bolsward

Forty skeletal remains have been uncovered during preparations for installing a fountain in the Frisian city of Bolsward.

Omrop Fryslân reports that six skeletons were found in April when excavation works began near the Broerekerk. The site will be the location of one of the eleven fountains project during the Capital of Culture year, which will open on Friday, 18 May.

The Bolswards Nieuwsblad reported in April when the first remains were found that excavators were anticipating such a discovery: the area had a number of monasteries between the 13thcentury and 1580, including the Broerekerk itself. The municipality called in a team of archaeologists to supervise the dig.

The remains are being tested to determined date of death, gender, age and whether or not illness played a role in their death.
