D66 would like to see the area surrounding the Schuitendiep canal transformed into an Utrecht-esque scene with stair cases and walkways by the water.
According to Sikkom, the party’s plans prioritise making the area car-free and thereby more pedestrian friendly with recreational and green spaces. The quay alongside the Schuitendiep canal is currently used for parking spaces in front of restaurants and cafes. The party’s plans also call for eventually adapting the quays along the Noorderhaven and the Turfsingel.
“We basically treat this beautiful area like a car park”, says D66 member Tom Rustebiel. “I believe that we will eventually look back on parking cars alongside the canals in the same way that we now see parking on the Vismarkt.”
Last week, Dagblad van het Noorden reported that the municipal council voted against replacing the bridge at the Kattendiep with a moveable bridge along the city’s canal ring. In the future, buses to the city centre will travel across the bridge.
The proposed construction plans for the area were created by korth tielens architects, Strackee Building Consultants, Royal HaskoningDHV and DS landscape architects on behalf of the municipality of Groningen.
