The incredible looking building will form the central point of the district with a health centre, supermarket, café, and school
Translated by Thomas Ansell
An incredible looking building is beginning to sprout out of the ground in the Meerstad district to the east of the city. The new-build district is known for its distinctive architecture, and the new soaring structure has been designed by De Zwarte Hond, in Groningen itself.
As reported by the GIC, the building will be called the ‘SuperHub’, and will contain ‘the supermarket of the future’, a health centre, café; and social space. Underneath, a new school will be opened, called the ‘IKC Groenewei’.
Much of the superstructure of the ‘SuperHub’ will be formed from wood, with an interlocking organic structure not unlike the Metropol Parasol in Seville (designed by Jurgen Mayer). The building will be finished by August of next year, and in November developers MWPO will decide upon a supermarket tenant- with three brands in the race.
