Matthew Otten is a US/Dutch ex-player and now coach, who has won the Dutch basketball championship with Donar
The new Donar basketba;l coach, Matthew Otten, has promised “fast basketball, played with the heart and mixed with intelligence”. Otten has been contracted for two seasons, with another year as an option. The Las Vegas born ex-player last coached Yoast United (Bemmel, Gelderland), and has previously won the Dutch basketball league (2010) and cup (2011) with Donar. As reported by the GIC.
Otten has also played for a range of other European clubs, including Apollon Limassol in Cyprus and Cheshire Phoenix and the Mersey Tigers in the UK, as well as San Francisco State university in the US. He last played in Groningen mainly as a shooting guard in the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 seasons, during which time Donar had a sportswashing deal with GasTerra and were known as the GasTerra Flames.
Matthew Otten started his coaching career as assistant under Sam Jones at SPM Shoeters in 2015. From 2019 he was club coach with the Dreamfield Dolphins (the predecessor of Yoast) and assistant national coach with the Dutch National Team under Maurizio Buscaglia, a position he still holds .
Otten impressed as a player as a hard worker and good defender, but as a coach he is more attacking: “,y style is fast basketball, played with the heart and mixed with intelligence. I am a true “together guy” and I expect my team to understand that we are working on something bigger than ourselves”, he says.
“My ambition is to work harder than all our opponents and play high-level basketball with a high energy level, so that Donar fans want to be part of this. Connecting the fans with the team is something that worked really well in the time I played here myself”, says Otten.
