Two fires broke out on Franeker’s industrial estate this weekend, the Leeuwarder Courant reports. On Saturday morning, a pile of pallets caught fire in a warehouse on Zuidelijke Industrieweg, but firefighters quickly contained the flames. The next day, blaze destroyed an entire warehouse that belongs to Huhtamäki, a Finnish consumer packaging company which operates the only egg carton manufacturing business in the Netherlands.
Smoke and flames could be seen from miles around and the fire service received multiple calls.
Several crews responded to the fire, which was allowed to burn itself out. Firefighters were on scene throughout the day to make sure no materials reignited.
It is understood several million egg boxes have been destroyed and the warehouse will be non-operational for some time, stirring concerns about the disruption of packaging supplies.
Nobody was injured in the incident and the cause of the fire is still unknown.
