The staff at Martini Hospital in Groningen will get a 500-euro bonus this month as a gift in recognition of their hard work during the recent flu season.

The hospital is able to pay the one-time bonus thanks to 13.5 million euros in profits they made over the past year.
Chairperson of the hospital’s board, Hans Feenstra, told Dagblad van het Noorden that the bonus is a way to thank the 2,900 hospital staff for how hard they worked under difficult conditions during this winter’s flu season. “We were over capacity and our staff really went above and beyond the call of duty”, Feenstra says.
The hospital has grown by 4.3 percent in recent years, which put the hospital in the position to share at least some of the wealth. The hospital has used some of the profits to invest in expanding their capacity. All hospital staff, except for medical specialists, will receive the bonus: part time staff members will receive a percentage of the 500-euro bonus.
