Marie-José van Tol, a researcher at UMCG, has won the Heineken Young Scientists Award 2018 from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) .
Van Tol, who is also a member of the Young Academy Groningen, won the Social Sciences award for her research on the factors that contribute to depression and other psychiatric disorders.

The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences says that the awards “are intended to give the next generation of talented researchers extra encouragement”. 2018 is the first year that the awards were given out for Humanities, Social Sciences, Medical/Biomedical Sciences and Natural Sciences. This year’s other winners include legal sociologist Maartje van der Woude, biochemist Joost Snijder and geoscientist Peter Bijl.
Each winner receives 10,000 euros and a work of art by Amsterdam artist Jeroen Henneman. The award ceremony will take place on 27 September.
