The 20-year old man that killed his girlfriend and her six-year-old daughter in Haren in October last year has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for two counts of manslaughter.
On the night of the killings, 23-year old Nebyat Msgen’s boyfriend strangled her and slit her throat after she told him that she wanted to end their relationship and get back together with her ex, who was also the father of her six-year-old daughter.
When her six-year-old daughter Bemnet found her murdered mother, the suspect smothered her to death with a piece of fabric.
After the killings, the killer made a failed attempt to commit suicide. The next morning, he contacted an acquaintance and asked him to call the police.
Police found the man and the two dead bodies in the house on the Jufferpad in Haren. The one-year-old daughter of the suspect and Msgen was still alive and inside the house with him.
According to people who knew the couple, both of whom are originally from Eritrea, they had been fighting a lot in the months leading up to the fatal incident.
Manslaughter
According to the judge, the suspect acted in a fit of jealous rage and did not plan the killings, which is why he was convicted of manslaughter rather than murder.
