The Groninger Internet Courant reports that the police have taken to social media to ask anyone who may have heard or seen anything in connection to the incident to come forward and share any information or tips.
The attack occurred around 7:20 p.m. as the man was biking through the park coming from the direction of the Crematoriumlaan. When he turned right toward the Kometenlaan, he was struck some kind of corrosive fluid which required medical attention. Photos shared by the police show injuries to the man’s legs with dark-coloured burns near his knee.
So-called acid attacks or incidents where bystanders are struck with corrosive fluids are fairly rare in the Netherlands, but in October of 2018, a mountain biker was struck by an unknown substance in Kerkrade in Limburg.
