Residents of the province of Groningen have access to discounted bicycle helmets as part of an initiative to increase bike safety, until May 8th.
The initiative, a collaboration between the province and Groningen’s traffic council, Verkeerswijzer Groningen, wants to encourage the use of bicycle helmets in the province. The use of a helmet can reduce the chance of serious brain injuries from a bicycle accident by 60%, according to the Foundation for the Promotion of Traffic Education (SBV).
The discount of €25 is applicable to all residents of the province regardless of age. Helmets must be bought at participating bicycle shops, must cost at least €49 and be CE 1078 or CE 1080 approved. Each resident can purchase a maximum of 1 helmet. To make use of the discount, residents simply have to sign a declaration form at one of the participating shops to confirm that they live in the province of Groningen. The discount is applied immediately to the purchase amount. It is then up to the store to file the declaration for it to be reimbursed.
The promotion is available until May 8th, however, due to budgetary limits, the promotion period may be capped earlier if the number of helmets bought exceeds 1,600 helmets. The number of discounted helmets still available can be found on the SBV website.
