Landing fighter jets at the airbase in Leeuwarden can only use the short runway for the time being: lightning strikes created holes on the long runway at the base on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the air base told the Leeuwarder Courant that the runway was damaged during severe thunderstorms that swept through the region on Tuesday evening. Lightning strikes created several holes, which have now been marked off with orange paint, on one of the runways.
Jets can still take off from the damaged runway, but depending on the direction of the wind, the aircraft have to land on the shorter second runway until the damage is repaired. It is not yet known how long it will take to fill the holes.
