A group of NHL Stenden students have rallied together in order to spread some joy to senior citizens who may be feeling lonely and isolated amid the coronavirus outbreak. Their goal is simple: send cards and positive messages to the residents of care homes to lift their spirits, the Leeuwarder Courant reports.
“We hope to be able to connect lonely elderly people and students who are going through a difficult time because of the corona,” lecturer Maarten Wessels told the newspaper.
The campaign was launched last year in Leeuwarden, but this year it expanded to include senior care facilities in Emmen. This time around, the students decided to share their contact details so that the seniors can write back to them.
“We realize it is largely thanks to the older generation that we live our lives the way we do. We want to show them our appreciation with this writing campaign,” said Jaco Verwoert, president of the student association Io Vivat.”
The cards will be delivered to various nursing homes during the Valentine’s Day.
