The Julianaplein is a huge traffic junction, where four of the largest roads in the North meet- and is also most car drivers first impression of the city
Groningen’s huge multiyear ‘Aanpak Ringweg Zuid‘ project is intended to completely redesign traffic flow in an out of the city. The project involves digging a swish new tunnel for the motorway, and creating a new interchange named after the former Dutch Queen, Juliana (who must be thrilled).
The changes are ably illustrated on the project website– and the GIC reports that work is going ahead at full speed on the Julianaplein, and southern ring road tunnel.
Above that there will be a new park, the Zuiderpark. Everything is scheduled to be ready in two years.
As has been previously reported, the total budget for the project could come to over 600 million euros; approximately 20 percent of the projected total costs for the Lelylijn.
