A clean-up focusing specifically on cigarette butts is being organised in Groningen’s city centre on Friday and anyone can join!
Cigarette butts are the most common kind of trash on the streets in the world and have a big impact on nature and waterways. Because of the toxins that stay behind in the cigarette butt and the plastic that the filter is made of, they are especially dangerous to animals, who might accidentally ingest them. Even though in the Netherlands there’s a 140 euro fine for throwing a butt on the street, people throw about 6 billion butts as litter in the environment. Cleaning them up is difficult and time-intensive because they don’t disintegrate but are quite small.
Friday’scleanup is organised by Groningen Schoon Dankzij Mij (Groningen clean because of me) and the Green Office of the University of Groningen and is a part of the Let’s Gro festival, which is held in the Forum this weekend. The cleanup aims to contribute to a healthier and cleaner living environment and to raise awareness of the impact of cigarettes on the environment.
The event is free and will start at the Grote Markt, where there will be a party tent. There is no need to sign up, you can just come by between 11:00 and 15:00 on Friday the 8th of November where you can then decide how long you want to stay.
