University College Fryslân will open its doors to bachelor students this fall enrolled in its Global Responsibility & Leadership programme. Professor Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Secretary General at NATO, will join the bachelor programme.
Scheffer appreciates the new programme’s emphasis on leadership in an international context. The professor will be teaching courses and leading informal “fireplace talks” where students can learn more about Scheffer’s professional experience in a more casual setting.
Scheffer is no stranger to the small-scale University College approach: according to a press release from the University of Groningen, Scheffer has taught at Leiden University College for nearly a decade. The former NATO minister also has strong personal roots in Friesland. “My mother was born and raised here and my grandfather was doing business in the ‘Beurs-building’ where Campus Fryslân will soon be located.”
In keeping with the professor’s contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN, his academic expertise focuses on international relations and peacekeeping. The curriculum at UCF will incorporate case studies based on the UN’s sustainability objectives.
