Starting on the 22nd of November, the Grote Markt will be transformed into a winter wonderland once again with the return of the Groningen on Ice skating rink.

The Groninger Internet Courant reports that the 600-meters-squared ice skating rink will be open for six weeks. Even if the temperatures outside are above freezing, the rink’s ice will be kept frozen solid.
The rink’s fairy lights and towering spires are reminiscent of the popular Disney film “Frozen”, but the rink is for skaters of all ages and experience levels. In previous years, the rink has provided plastic penguins for children who are still learning how to skate to stay upright on the ice
The ice skating surface will be set up against the steps of the VVV building for skaters or spectators who need to sit a spell. A café on site will be serving warm beverages and snacks.
A range of activities will be playing out on the ice through the winter weeks, including Groningen-style curling and an ice hockey competition. Every Wednesday afternoon, the rink will host a special children’s event with kiddy music and a colouring competition. On Friday evenings, the rink will transform into a disco for the more ambitious and artistic skaters.
The skating rink’s hours are from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. most days with modified hours on holidays. Admissions are 4 euros and you can rent a pair of skates for 3.50.
