The Dutch government is proposing deporting Nunë and Davit to Armenia- they speak no Armenian and all their connections are in the Netherlands
Translated by Thomas Ansell
Hundreds of people gathered on Groningen’s Grote Markt on Thursday to protest at plans to deport two Groninger children to Armenia: where neither has ever lived. Nunë (9) and Davit (7) have lived in Groningen their whole lives and attend school in the city. Their parents fled Armenia to the Netherlands before either was born, and neither child speaks any Armenian- nor do they have any family that remains in the Transcaucasian country.
As reported by the GIC, a petition to keep the two children in their home in the Netherlands has been signed over 40,000 times, and will be debated by the Dutch parliament in the near future.
The protest included a speech by Mayor Koen Schuiling of Groningen, as well as Nunë reading a special poem written for the protest by Myron Hamming, the city poet.
