In October, the University of Groningen will present an honorary doctorate to Ban Ki-Moon, the former secretary-general of the United Nations.
According to a press release from the University of Groningen, Ban is receiving the honorary degree “for his outstanding achievements as Chair of the Global Commission on Adaptation (GCA) and his societal contributions in the field of peacekeeping and the development of the Paris Agreement.” Elmer Sterken, the rector of the University of Groningen, will present the degree to Ban during a ceremony on 17 October.
Ban Ki-Moon was the eight secretary-general of the United Nations and served in that capacity from 2007 to 2016. NU.nl reports that Ban prioritised a united global approach to combating climate change during his tenure.
