Holland Casino, the Dutch state-owned gambling company, has announced its decision to relocate from Groningen and establish a new casino in the province of Drenthe at a site adjacent to the A7 highway near Hoogkerk. “We are pleased to announce our plans to build a new casino in Drenthe,” said Petra de Ruiter, CEO of Holland Casino. “We believe this is the best location for our business and we are excited to begin the process of bringing our new casino to the region.”
The new establishment is expected to open its doors in 2027 and will be situated just south of Hoogkerk at Businesspark Ter Borch, in close proximity to the McDonald’s restaurant. The new site in Drenthe was chosen for its good accessibility and building opportunities.
The announcement brings an end to years of uncertainty regarding the definitive location of the casino. Following a fire that broke out in August 2017 at the old casino building on Gedempte Kattendiep in Groningen, a temporary casino was opened on Europaweg in December 2018. Since then, speculation has been rife about a permanent location for the casino. “We understand that some people in Groningen are disappointed that the casino is leaving the city,” De Ruiter said. “However, we believe that this is the best decision for the long-term future of our business.”
While Holland Casino’s management is happy with the chosen site, there are still some issues to be resolved before any final decisions are made. The municipal council of Tynaarlo must approve the project, and if it does, the company can start planning and building the new casino. Petra de Ruiter is excited about the prospects and is looking forward to the new new casino opening its doors. She believes that it will be good for both guests and employees. “We are confident that the new casino will be a valuable addition to the Drenthe region,” she says. “We are excited to begin working with the municipality of Tynaarlo to make this project a reality.”
The exact design of the new establishment will be subject to a detailed planning application. However, it is confirmed that the casino will be located at the end of the current Ambitielaan on Businesspark Ter Borch, where a roundabout will be constructed for access to the forthcoming building.
