Police in Groningen launched an extensive search, deploying a helicopter and dog teams, in the hunt for a man who allegedly pulled a woman off her bike and attacked her in the early hours of Friday.
On Facebook, the Police said they are looking for a man who is around 20 years old. At the time of the alleged attack, he was dressed in black and may also have been wearing dark glasses. The man has a dark skin tone and short hair. No image has been circulated, but police are appealing for any witnesses or people who may have footage of the attack to come forward.
Police were notified about the attack that happened in the Hereweg street, which runs roughly between the central train station and the Helpman neighbourhood, at around 04:30 on Friday. As she was attacked the woman screamed and luckily managed to attract the attention of bystanders. Local media reports say the suspect fled as soon as people in the area came over to assist the woman.
Police have advised the public not to approach the suspect if they spot him.
This latest violent incident comes just days before Groningen’s annual KEI-week, a week-long celebration to welcome this academic year’s new students to the city.
