Restaurant Smink, run by Chef Jan Smink, fought off competition from around the country to be named in TheFork Restaurant Awards 2019
The Frisian restaurant was named ninth in the list of the best restaurants to have opened in the last year. Based in Wolvega, in the south of Friesland, the restaurant has become known for being one of the most innovative in the region, as reported in the Leeuwarder Courant.
TheFork Restaurant Awards 2019 is a competition by the restaurant booking and reviewing website TheFork. The jury for the awards includes 31 figures from the culinary world, who may each nominate a new restaurant for consideration.
Restaurant Smink was one of the only restaurants in the competition from outside of the Randstad. The winner was chosen by users of TheFork’s platform. Smink was nominated for the prize by chef Dennis van den Beld, who himself runs a michelin-starred restaurant in Ermelo (Gelderland), called Het Roode Koper.
Van den Beld nominated Restaurant Spink for its approach to Frisian gastronomy, the flavours it imparts to its dishes, and the innovative culinary techniques used in preparation: including a 3-D food printer.
The overall winner of the awards was Frenchie, in Haarlem (North Holland), a neighbourhood restaurant that puts out exceptionally good food. All restaurants in the top-10 have been awarded their very own golden fork. This was the first year that the competition was run.
