Having undergone renovation since September 2022, the Grote Markt Square in the center of Groningen will be reopened sometime in early 2024 with improved appearance and accessibility of the square area, as well as larger green areas.
The Groninger Internet Courant writes that the paving on the north side of the Grote Markt, which has been closed for over two months, is mostly complete. New trees have been planted, and a number of benches, railings, and bins have been installed.
The city said the square will have wider pedestrian paths, and green areas will take up a larger percentage of the square than before. The renovation will turn the square into a relaxion area, while wide benches under trees will serve as gathering spots for people of all ages to socialize.
Widened footpaths, wooden benches and lots of trees are all part of a €14-million makeover for the Grote Markt.
The adjacent Waagplein will also be revamped and will feature a fountain similar to the one on the Grote Markt. In the lead-up to the renovation, several local entrepreneurs expressed their concerns about the renovation plans. Sharp criticism was leveled in particular at the reduction in terrace areas and the removal of some trees.
