After the refurbishment work is almost done at Groningen’s Grote Markt which has seen new fountains, trees, and benches being installed, the grand opening featuring a festival will be held on June 1st.
The ‘Your Grote Markt Festival’ comes with free entrance and many artists performing. The festival is for all ages and besides the music, there’s also a kid’s area near the fountains.
You can follow an audio tour about the history of the Grote Markt, there will be theatre performances, and you can go to the Martini church to listen to choirs performing. Student association Vindicat’s HQ and the Grand Theatre will be open to the public and in the Town hall, you can have a look at the archaeological finds found at the Grote Markt.
The evening programme will be opened by the Broken Brass Ensemble followed by artists including Zoe Tauran. The programme will finish at midnight.
For the special celebrations, the municipality has free public transport available that you can sign up for. By signing up for a ‘Your Grote Markt Festival-bus ticket’ with your name and email on their website.
The ticket will only be valid for the 1st of June 2024 until the last bus at 04:00 the following morning. It’s valid on all busses from and to Groningen and for 2 people. Each adult can accompany a maximum of 3 children aged 4 to 11 years old. Children up to 3 years old travel free.
