The huge awnings will be made into bags by VanHulley
It could almost be a work by the French artist Christo: a packaged up City Hall in Groningen, but on Monday the awnings will fall to reveal the newly-refurbished City Hall. The enormous canvas that is hanging over the facade is to become raw material for bags, reports the GIC.
The restoration work on the outside of the front of the City Hall is almost finished and on Monday, April 19, contractor Rottinghuis will remove the big screens. In the days that followed, the scaffolding will be demolished and the City Hall will show its own face to the city again.
This spring – as part of social return agreements – a few thousand bags will be made from the canvas that the municipality will use for advertising purposes. The municipality of Groningen, contractor Rottinghuis and the social enterprise VanHulley have made agreements about the re-use of the material.
