Stalls have been re-arranged
The fresh food market in the center of Groningen (the Vismarkt) can remain open thanks to extra measures that have been taken in the last few days. Thanks to a different arrangement of the stalls and a partial relocation, the market can remain open for the time being, during the Coronavirus outbreak.
“But we do depend on the weather and mood of the shopping public,” says market master Dirk Jan Kooiman. As reported by the GIC.
The municipality organises the market and market masters must keep the age-old tradition on the right track. “We hear from many people: nice that you are still there. Others find it too busy and say that the market must be closed. They forget that the market is not entertainment, but a large department store that provides a basic necessity of life, “says Kooiman.
After the corona crisis erupted, the market masters immediately took measures. “First we pulled the market a little bit apart. That in itself went well. Then the weather turned nice and people all went outside. As a result, the market seemed very full on Saturday 4 April. ”
“Then we brought the non-food to the Grote Markt and the refrigerated trucks to the A-Kerkhof.” This created space on the Vismarkt. There the market stalls are now also on the road. “As a result, the paths for the public have become between 9 and 11 meters, double the normal.”
