The plan started with the new ‘island’ benches, and will end with the Grote Markt being pedestrianised
Since last week, the municipality of Groningen has started placing trees on the east side of the Grote Markt: one larger and a few small ones, as part of a radical redesign for the Grote Markt (which currently has traffic on three sides).
Now that the Markt Hotel has officially opened, another phase has been completed (the renovation of the east side), whilst the renovation of the Town Hall is also nearing completion.
The intention is then that the buses will disappear from the Grote Markt at the end of this year: they will then only drive on the Diepenring.
The municipality wants to turn the Grote Markt into a beautiful square where people can meet each other, and where it is always lively, with space for greenery and water.
Yet it is not yet known what the Grote Markt will look like. The city council has yet to establish a plan, after which a concept design can be made. This is followed by a consultation round, after which the municipal council must take a final decision. Work will start in 2022 and the Grote Markt will be completely finished in 2022/2023.
