Groningen wants to trade horse-racing for pop superstars in Stadspark

The Gemeente Groningen wants to create an event space for the national stage

The “Drafbaan” in the Stadspark, now a center for equestrian sports in the Northern Netherlands, should be developed into a top event area, says the Gemeente Groningen. The municipality wants to invest heavily in the site, so that the Drafbaan can soon compete with renowned locations such as the Goffertpark in Nijmegen and the Zuiderpark in The Hague. As reported by the GIC.

The municipality wants to have an “event area with a capacity of possibly 65 thousand people, where shows of the absolute world top can be held (U2, Coldplay, Rammstein)”.

In 1999 the Stadspark was the setting for a performance by the Rolling Stones, and in 2000 by Tina Turner. There was then a 10-year gap or so before the Drafbaan started a second life as an event site with, among others, Stadspark Live and Hullabaloo.

According to the Municipality, this is the future of the Stadspark.

The Drafbaan should not only grow into a top event location, but also should become the greenest event location in the Netherlands, according to the city. This could be done by investing in better power and water supplies for the supply and removal of water for toilets, flushing facilities for plastic cups; and to limit the use of diesel generators.

In addition to tackling infrastructure (water, electricity, internet), the city wants to invest in leveling the field, constructing drainage, improving the inflow and outflow of visitors and improving the accessibility of the Drafbaan for emergency services.
