More green is always good
The municipality of Groningen want to realise 30,000 square meters of greenery, achieved by among other things, planting at least 1,000 trees annually. The news has been announced by Alderman Glimina Chakor (GroenLinks), and reported by the GIC.
The mayor and aldermen of Groningen say it is important that there is more, better and accessible greenery. “We have high ambitions,” says Chakor. “In addition to trees, planted areas, lawns and parks create attractive neighborhoods and villages and enhance biodiversity. ”
The ‘greening’ of Groningen will take place not only in public space, but also in gardens and on grounds, with the idea that green-space should never be far away.
The project should also help the city with any heat-stress issues: trees provide shade and coolness on very hot days. It is also hoped that the presence of greenery will invite residents to go outside and move around, which is good for health, the municipality says.
“And we want diverse greenery such as bee ribbons and ecological roadsides. Through this we can increase biodiversity and this is desperately needed, so we are creating a place where people, animals and plants come together, “says Alderman Chakor.
One of the projects that has been carried out this year already is greening the school squares of primary schools. Due to the successful approach, it is being continued.
And the construction of façade gardens is so successful that the project will continue in 2020. In recent years, more than 400 facade gardens have already been laid out in Groningen.
