University of Groningen alumnus Christiaan Triebert has been promoted to senior video journalist in Visual Investigations at the New York Times.
In a statement, the New York Times said during the past five years, Triebert has been a trailblazer in open-source reporting and excelled at combining traditional approaches with advanced digital forensics.
Triebert studied international relations at the University of Groningen (RUG) graduating in 2015. In 2019 he was crowned the RUG’s alumnus of the year. Before joining the NY Times he was involved in multiple investigations for Bellingcat using OSINT techniques(open source intelligence) – conducting investigations based on information and evidence that’s publicly available.
At the New York Times, Triebert contributed to projects that led to several major awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes.
In 2019, Triebert came to Groningen to share his techniques and receive the Alumnus of the Year award at his alma mater. He also spoke to The Northern Times about his work.
