The Groningen professor Amina Helmi, who works at the Kapteyn Institute, has received a European award for an exceptional achievement in her field. She received the ‘Lodewijk Woltjer Lecture Award 2021’. The award means that she receives a medal and can also give a lecture to the European Astronomical Society (EAS).
Helmi has an exceptional career in astronomy, in particular in the field of galactic archeology: the reconstruction of the history of galaxies based on the current positions, movements and composition of stars, the University of Groningen reports.
As an astronomical archaeologist, she searches for remains of old galaxies to reconstruct the evolution of our Milky Way.
