During a high speed chase, Groningen police officers fired shots at a car overnight on Tuesday.
The driver was eventually detained by the police and taken into custody. The driver, who was heading toward Hoogkerk, is a 42-year-old man from Amsterdam.
The police received a report that a car was driving recklessly through the city centre of Groningen. Dagblad van het Noorden reports that officers in a surveillance van spotted the vehicle and a chase ensued through Zernike, Paddepoel and Vinkhuizen.
The vehicle was travelling at high speed and swerving dangerously, and the police attempted to shoot at it to bring it to a halt. The chase ended at the A7 ramp near Hoogkerk when the vehicle crashed.
No one was injured and the driver was arrested. According to the police, several abandoned bicycles were found on Voermanstraat in Paddepoel after the chase, which officers suspect were left behind by cyclists who had to get out of the driver’s path.
