The terraces might appear on both the Grote Markt and Vismarkt
The mayor and councilors of Groningen have presented radical proposals to give pedestrians more space in Groningen, whilst Coronavirus regulations are gently eased, GIC.nl reports.
One of the proposals concerns making huge pub terraces on the Grote Markt and Vismarkt, these would ensure clear distance between tables, and allow people to go out for a drink again, under clear conditions.
The Mayor and city councilors have proposed exploring the idea together with hospitality entrepreneurs. It must be ensured that the terraces give enough space for people, without becoming ‘events’ in themselves and attracting too-large crowds.
Therefore, it could be an option to allow terraces on Vismarkt and Grote Markt on non-market days.
The municipality also wants to investigate whether it is possible to make terraces possible at the Martinikerkhof and at the Waagplein, as well as locations outside the center.
