The Mayor of Groningen Koen Schuiling has been fined for indecent behaviour.
RTV Noord reported that Schuiling was fined €250 by the Public Prosecution Service, however, details of the incident leading up to the fine remain scarce.
In a statement, Schuiling, who recently announced he was stepping down from his role as Mayor, claimed it was all one big misunderstanding. Schuiling said the incident took place in March this year while he was driving. Schuiling said he experienced abdominal pain and that his attempt to combat it was interpreted offensively by another road user.
Schuiling said he gave his version of events to the police, however they proceeded with issuing a fine.
Schuiling announced his early departure at the beginning of this month. He now added that the situation surrounding the fine played a part in that decision.
Schuiling will be contesting the fine in court.
RTV Noord reported that the majority of parties in the municipality of Groningen indicated that they support Schuiling.
